Impression on coming back to Inquiry

When I came to Inquiry yesterday (April 1, 2014) after being away for a few months, I was struck by something positive about the sangha that is hard to put into words. The best I can do is to say that people looked healthy in a sense, that there was a positive, quiet energy, that these are people I like to be around. Somehow it reminds me, when my grandson is sitting on the floor and hears something behind him, he turns and looks up with a smile on his face, expecting that something good is going to happen. Hmm, when I think about it, that is how I feel when I come to Inquiry.

Master painters: "Each moment, life as it is, the only teacher"

Looking recently at paintings by masters including Goya, Leonardo da Vinci, and the early Picasso, the words "Each moment, life as it is, the only teacher" came to mind.  It looked like they had painted the subject exactly as they saw her or him right in the moment, not according to some preconceived idea.

History of Lisa Kuntz's accident and condition

For those of you who haven't heard:

On Sunday, Dec. 5, Lisa was in a very bad car crash near Wichita falls on the way to see her aunt.

The worst thing was that her heart was injured, but it took the docs a few days to make the diagnosis, in which they found that the muscles controlling both heart valves were injured..  On Friday, Dec. 9th, she was flown by helicopter to the Heart Hospital in Plano.  Two hours later, one of the best heart surgeons in the country…

Lisa Kuntz status Jan. 9

Midday Jan. 9 from Jessica:

This morning Lisa was taken off the ventilator again and is only on oxygen. They will see how she does throughout the day.  It may take a few days before she can stay off the vent. She had her music on when I left. The ortho doctor and the vascular doctor are looking at mom's legs and feet and will be around early this week. Her bilirubin is down to 17.8 today and all her other liver numbers continue to drop and normalize. Lisa is still on a lot of pain…

Lisa Kuntz's progress

I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate place to post news about Lisa as she is struggling to recover from her auto accident of December 5.  She has survived open-heart surgery and gall-bladder surgery with flying colors.  She is now recovering slowly but consistently after her surgery for a cracked liver.  Here are updates from her daughter Jessica today with a postscript from me:…

Paul Knitter, "How a Buddhist Christian Sees It"

On Election Day, this perspective about how the Buddha's "Middle Way" might apply in politics seems especially appropriate. The link is to a blog on the web site for Union Theological Seminary (Columbia University), where I received my M.Div.

Appamada is not just the occasional mindful thought or attentive state of mind, it’s actually a commitment to being attentive. It’s more than just a meditative state of mind, it’s more than just being mindful. It has to do with that primary ethical or moral orientation we have in life, with which we bring into being whatever activity we’re engaged in. Whether in formal meditation, in our interactions with other people, in our social concerns, or in our political choices, it’s the energetic cherishing of what we regard as good.
